Chapter 17

The Fibonacci Question

Sooner or later every reader of a book about ratios in markets will ask the same question: what about Fibonacci? The retracement tool is on every platform, its levels are on half the charts posted online, and the box model’s ladder is, after all, a set of proportions of a range. Are they the same thing? Is one a version of the other? This chapter answers directly, because the answer matters for how much a trader should trust each.

What the Tool Claims

The Fibonacci retracement tool takes a move — a swing low to a swing high — and draws horizontal lines at fixed fractions of it: 23.6%, 38.2%, 50%, 61.8%, and 78.6% are the usual set. The claim is that pullbacks tend to stop at these fractions, and that the fractions are special because they derive from the Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio, φ ≈ 1.618, which appears in sunflowers, seashells, and the proportions of classical architecture.

The sequence and the ratio are real mathematics. The step from there to markets is the part to examine.
